Chapter 6: Curve ball. USA Present Day. Warren carried Swallow into the living room and placed her on the couch. She had fainted dead away upon seeing Sabrina's photos. They just couldn't understand why, though. The pictures of the Skunktaur had stunned them all but Swallow had become suddenly terrified. Sabrina just stood by and stared in awe at Swallow. Although she was a lot thinner than her, she was still her twin. As she examined the thin waif, Sabrina noticed something funny about her fur. She moved in closer and gently ran her paw across it. Its texture instantly gave it away as she found it very coarse, more like very fine quills than fur. Although they weren't stiff enough to stick into flesh, they were as thick as toothpicks. Warren and Endora had gone to get some blankets. As they returned, Sabrina said, "Dad, this is getting very strange." He had a puzzled look on his face. "Don't I know it, your pictures just put the creep in creepy." He placed the blankets on the shaking form of Swallow. She could hardly keep still and Warren wondered what was going on in her head. "Now as to why Swallow fainted I'm not too sure, but I hope she can tell us later. I don't want to…" He didn't get to finish his sentence for Swallow suddenly awoke screaming. "MOTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Swallow started thrashing about, her arms and legs going every which way. It took Warren quite a bit of effort to grab hold of Swallow and even more in not hurting her. "Swallow you're safe; it's me, Warren!" He spoke to her firmly but calmly. "Swallow, it's ok girl, you're safe!" He noticed her eyes were glazed over as he held her close. His attempts to comfort her by rocking her gently back and forth seemed futile. For Swallow, it seemed all too real, and in fact it was. Time had passed over the event but to her it still existed fresh in her mind. She suddenly became aware of where she was and who was holding her. It happened again. Swallow thought; she suddenly became embarrassed and started to cry. "It's ok, honey, it's ok." Warren hugged the little girl and his heart went out to her. What ever had happened to her must have been horrible. She was still shaking in his arms as he comforted her. He remembered some nights, when Sabrina had nightmares. As he cradled her in his arms he felt love, and the pride of being a father. Sabrina and Endora just stood there, not knowing what to do. "I can take over Warren." Endora said. "It's ok love, I think it's best that I hold onto her." "Warren, what did that creature do to her?" "I'm not sure but if our paths ever cross she better look out." He only wished that his presence could ease Swallow's pain. "What are we going to do Mom?" Sabrina asked, standing nervously. Endora looked at Sabrina, "It might be best if we just left these two alone for a little while." Warren nodded, as Swallow sobbed. "I'll make some ice tea." Endora said as she headed towards the kitchen followed closely by Sabrina. "Poor Swallow." Sabrina said as the door closed behind them. Sabrina could see that her Mother was upset. "How could anyone torture a child?" Endora's voice was full of anger. "If I get a hold of that woman." Endora clutched her fists. It was so unlike her Mother to be so angry and upset. "I know, Mom, she must be sick, really sick." Sabrina said trying to calm her mother's nerves. Endora sighed knowing Sabrina was right. No one in his or her right mind would harm a child. Sabrina began looking through the cupboards but had no luck finding the powdered drink. "Mom where do you keep the ice tea?" Her Mother wasn't answering and seemed to be lost in thought. "Mom?" She gave her Mom a slight poke. "Huh!! Oh sorry dear. What was it you wanted?" "The ice tea." "Over here." She opened the cupboard and removed the can. "I think its going to be a long evening." "I think so too Mom." She gave her Mother a badly needed seeing her mother could really use one. Canada Present Day. Heather watched as Mrs. Johnston's car pulled away. She could see Sabrina waving and she waved back. Nancy came up behind her daughter and gently rubbed her back. She joined her daughter in waving goodbye as well. Heather turned her head and spoke. "Well Mom, did you like her?" "Well you said she was your twin; she's all that and more, hun. Margrette and I have a lot in common too. I hope we get to see them again soon." She could see how happy Heather was. She knew Heather really didn't have a lot of friends but today she had made one. "Well I have to start putting Sabrina's computer together tomorrow, that's if the parts come in." "I know she picked the right person for a computer." Commented Sid as he came and joined them. "That's one thing you're an expert in." He gave his daughter's head a rub. "Did Sabrina say when she might see her twin sister again?" "No, not really. Sabrina was hoping she might come this year sometime but she wasn't sure. Her sister doesn't make a lot of money." Heather was secretly hoping that she would come though, being her twin and all. "It would be interesting to have us all together." Nancy said smiling, almost giggling really. "Now that would sure make an interesting picture!" She grinned. "Mom, nobody would know who was who if all the pictures were taken from the waist up." She laughed. "Now Dad, you said something about a Windows error you keep getting." "Hey! Before you go off and I don't see you for hours, give your mother a hug." "Sure, Mom." Heather gave her a big hug. "Thanks, for having them over." "It's ok dear, you have always chosen your friends wisely. And they all have remained good choices." "Yeah but I think Sabrina is going to be a very special friend." "I think she'll be just that." The night was finally winding down as Margrette and Sabrina drove home. She looked over at her daughter and for some reason she thought she should have four feet. She giggled to herself and that got Sabrina's attention. "What are you laughing at?" She asked. "Oh nothing." Still chuckling. "Come on mom, what's so funny?" Sabrina stared at her mom trying to get her to break. "Ok, I just thought you lacked a couple of extra feet." Sabrina looked down then she looked at her mother with this funny look. "Very funny Mother." "I thought it was, Heather is so cute." It was so true, Sabrina was too but she found Heather equally cute in a different way. "She tried very hard to make a good first impression tonight." "She did do that, I think. I liked her mother as well plus she and I have a lot in common. I think a friendship started tonight." "That's good Mom; you can never really have too many friends." There was a harsh silence, so she decided to change the subject. "So when is it you have to be out of your old place again?" "End of the week, I'm slowly moving stuff into the new place. Max is helping move all the larger stuff on Friday." "Max? He's that black rabbit, right?" She recalled the young rabbit and was impressed with him when they met. She'd had hoped that Sabrina would continue the relationship and it seemed that she'd done so, which pleased her. "Yeah." "Do you like him?" Thought it was best to be direct, she had skimmed around on questions before and gotten nowhere. "Parents," Sabrina thought, they always wanted to know everything. "He's a nice guy, Mom. Sometimes a pain but most of the time very likeable." "That's good to hear." She smiled, as she crossed her fingers. It had been a little while since she asked her Mom about her new partner. It still bothered her somewhat. To her it didn't seem right but she loved her Mom and she didn't want to hurt her in any way. "How's Kathren? Has she settled into the house yet." She paused. "What did Dad think of her buying it?" "He wasn't too happy but she didn't argue about the price. I suggested that, I'm going to help her out with that part." "So is it official yet, I mean on paper." "Not quite but it's getting there." There was some apprehension in her Mother's voice as she replied. "Honey… I want you to know we both love you very much. It's just that your Father and I well….we grew apart. I tried to live up to him and well…, I found my way and lost his." Her face showed sorrow and Sabrina really didn't know how to react. "I know, Mom, but I know Dad still loves you." She put her paw out to her mom and she gently took it. "I know he does, very much but I can't be the woman he wants me to be. I tried and it just didn't work." Sabrina sighed she knew it to be true, Dad wanted something else out of Mom, something she couldn't give. "So Kathren and you are now a couple." "If you can call us that, it looks that way. I never in the world thought I would or could be attracted to another woman but there is something in Kathren that.… makes me happy." Sabrina grinned, she was content, if her Mom was happy who was she to argue. "She's nice Mom, and she's a great body guard." "That she is." She wanted to tell her daughter that she was also a great lover too but she thought it was a little too early to be talking about that. She would tell her but not right now. She pulled into the apartment parking lot and stopped the car. "Thanks Mom it's been a great evening, I think everything went ok." "Yes, I think we made a great impression on them." "I don't have to work tomorrow, will you be home? I can bring my recorder over so you can hear the tapes." "I'll be there, oh and remember Kathren will be there too, Ok? I just didn't want you to be surprised." "I understand." There was one more thing that Sabrina had on her mind that she really wanted to know. It was hard for her to bring up the subject but she thought since it was just them together it would be a good time to ask. "Ah…Mom..why is Tabitha staying with Dad?" Margrette knew this question was coming, she took a deep breath then started. "Hon, Tabitha is too young to deal with the situation that I'm in now. Your Father and I thought it best that Tabitha stay with him." "But she doesn't understand what's going on. I've tried to explain to her but she's only six, Mom!" "I know, she's cried every time I've been there." There was a long pause before Margrette started again. The 'Tabitha' issue was something that she felt horrible about and she really had no control over. She didn't want to give her youngest daughter up but in her heart she felt it was right. "Dear…..to have Tabitha live with us would be awkward and probably wouldn't fly with child services anyway. My lesbian relationship is too confusing for such a young child and we decided it would be for the best. Your Father has no objections to visits or even time spent with her. We agreed that it's best for now that she stay with him. Later, as she grows older we can explain in more detail and she can then decide who she wants to be with." A slight tear ran down her face and she quickly wiped it away. Sabrina saw the anguish on her mother's face and knew this was tearing her up inside. They obviously were trying their best to do what was right. "I understand…..I think." "Oh Sabrina, we're not even sure if we are doing the right thing. We asked counselors and other professionals and they are split. Frank said if it gets too bad then he will let Tabitha come and stay with us. Just as long as he can see her and spend time with her." "Sounds like that must have been quite a talk, Mom. Don't worry everything will be all right." "I know, it was so difficult trying to tell Tabitha." Her Mom sniffed trying to get a hold of herself. Sabrina thought it was time to change the subject now that she knew what she wanted to know. She had upset her Mother and that bothered her, she didn't mean to. "Ok Mom you've answered my question, just call on me if you need me to look after her." Her Mother smiled and leaned over and kissed her daughter on the cheek. "I bless the day you came into my life my little one, I love you so much." The tears were running down her Mothers face and Sabrina couldn't take it. Emotions began to stir within her and her eyes also began to glisten with tears. Sabrina embraced her Mother knowing it was going to be a long road for both of them. When they finally parted and Margrette composed herself she spoke again. "Oh, one other thing, Sabrina before you go, I've had a few arguments with Kathren over a small matter. Kathren has taken to going around the house in the buff. Says it has something to do with her fur. I don't believe it but I haven't been able to convince her otherwise. So I'm giving you fair warning." Sabrina's imagination went into overdrive, then just shook her head. "She must be quite a sight." "She is, I will try to get her to put something on tomorrow. She'll do it, I'm sure, but as I said you've been warned." "She must frighten the mailmen." Sabrina giggled. "Well she did go get the mail once like that and the fellow across the way fainted." Sabrina's mouth fell open. "No kidding?" "Nope. I had to pick him up and carry him back to his wife. Boy did I get a few words told to me." "So you're not getting a Christmas card from them I take it." "Maybe from him but not from her, that's for sure. Hahahahaa." She laughed and Sabrina smiled, this was the way she wanted to see her mom. "Ok Mom, seems your new life is going to be very interesting indeed." She gave her Mom a kiss on the cheek and got out of the car. "You said it. Love you, see you tomorrow." She waved and then drove off. Sabrina had at first found it hard to accept her mother was a lesbian, correction bisexual. Most of all she found her mate Kathren somewhat domineering but it seemed Mom found something in her to love. Oh well, she thought, I can't change my mother just like she can't change me. She turned and headed back towards her very messy and small apartment. She hated the place already and it only had been a week. US Present: Late Evening. Sabrina turned the radio up just a little bit more. She loved this car, it was lovely and handled like a dream. However the Lexus was only a loner and she almost had it for two months now. She had apologized to Zig for not having returned it yet. She didn't seem too concerned, but it still wasn't fair. Her dad had suggested one place and now that she thought about it, she realized that it wasn't too far from where she was. It was late, but that was all right, she was only window shopping anyway. No salesman needed. She found the car lot easily and pulled in, there were at least a hundred cars here. She drove slowly up between the cars, till she saw a small car that looked nice. She also saw that there was also one other fur looking around as well. But he was across the lot and busy with another car. She stopped and got out and took a look at the car. It was blue, which she liked, though the interior looked a bit worn. The price was certainly right, though. The insurance company had given her a nice settlement, enough to buy a decent car. She bent down to look at the tires when she heard a voice. "Anything I can help you with?" Oh my, a salesman at this time of the night? "Uh... no, just looking. " She said as she got up. As she did, she noticed it was that Lynx-looking fellow she'd seen a moment ago. "You work here?" He smiled, "Sorry, no but I saw you looking and thought you might need a little help. I know a fair bit about cars. " the lynx eyed the Lexus and saw the rental plate. "Not quite in the same league, huh?" Sabrina caught on. "Oh, yes, I wish I could afford that one, its beautiful, everything I would want in a car. But sadly it's only temporary." She thought he sounded nice, might as well take him up on his offer. "Know much about this one?" "Yes, enough to know to say, 'stay away'. " "Not good?" "Yes, not very good. " "Too bad, I liked the color. " "Well, there was a Volvo back there; it was dark blue. " "Volvo, the Swedish car? " "Correct, although it does have a lot of mileage on it. That scares a lot of people but if the car has been maintained mileage is only a minor worry. " Sounds interesting she thought, "Can you show me?" "Sure, no problem. By the way the name's Lee. " "Sabrina, nice to meet you. " They walked by car after car, then finally saw the dark blue car. It seemed to be in good shape but was really nothing to look at though. Lee started describing some of the features it had and it sounded promising. Seems he did know quite a bit about cars. It was too bad she had Chris, he was cute. "Have you found anything else?" "Nothing else in blue, but there are several nice cars here. " "Well best you show me, my Dad will be back here tomorrow to look at the Volvo at least. Might be best to have a few extra to look at. " "Yes, that sounds like a plan." So Lee showed Sabrina the better Toyotas, Hondas, and a couple of General Motors cars. She got a notebook out of her purse and wrote them down. She had jotted down several pages worth when they were all done. "Well I have quite a list to show my dad, thanks very much Lee; you have been a big help. " "You're quite welcome, I wouldn't want a nice young lady like yourself getting a bad deal. " Sabrina almost blushed, he was good and really nice. "Thanks Lee, you been very helpful." Lee was a bit nervous about what he was about to ask, "I was wondering, if you might be free for some dinner, another night of course?" Oh no, Sabrina thought. I feel rotten having to have to turn him down, he's so charming. "Oh Lee, I'm sorry but I'm engaged." He sighed, "Ah, all the best ones are taken." Drat he thought. "Not all, I have some lady friends who would love to meet a nice young fur such as yourself. What's your number?" A page slipped from her notebook as Sabrina removed it from her purse but Sabrina quickly grabbed it. Then she wrote Lee's name and address on it. "I'll pass it around among my friends, who knows you could still wind up with a date." She gave him a wink. "Thanks Sabrina that was nice of you. " Sabrina tore off another page and gave him her number. "Give me a call and give me a nudge if you don't hear from someone soon." "Ok will do. " Sabrina and Lee parted and she headed back to her car. She threw her purse on the seat and her notebook slipped out a bit. She got the car started then rolled down both front windows, it was a beautiful night. As she drove the wind picked up and a freak gust of wind blew her notebook open. Papers flew everywhere in the car and some escaped out the window. Sabrina quickly pulled over for she was sure she would crash. She straightened herself up and then picked up what remained of her notebook, there was not much left. However she still had the car list, then her heart sank, Lee's number was gone. Lee watched as Sabrina drove away. He thought of the lucky guy that got her and wished he were as lucky. He was about to put Sabrina's note in his pocket when a freak gust of wind almost blew him over. When it had passed he found he no longer held the piece of paper Sabrina had given him. Her number was now afloat upon the wind. He was upset with himself that he had lost it. Then he thought that Sabrina still had his number, which helped a bit. He would have to wait to see if she called. Damn! He swore as he got into his car. |
