Chapter 10 Witch way does the wind blow?

The group just stared at the ugly thing before them but it was Endora that gained the courage to confront this beast. "What are you and how do you know about Margrette?"
"My name is Sabrina, I am a human and a witch and Margrette needs your help. She asked me to come for you, she needs your help in rowing that boat." Sabrina pointed to the crystal ball where the group could see Margrette rowing a huge boat on a calm dead sea.
Endora was the first to volunteer, "Then take me to her, I'll help her."
"I'll go!" Kathren interjected.
"Wait you do not understand, there is great danger involved. The place where Margrette is at is a dimension far away from this one and is a place with only one exit. Once there your only escape is if the boat goes through it. If not, you would die there."
Endora and the others were confused, they couldn't understand how Margrette had been spirited away to that place. "Why is Margrette rowing this boat? Did you put her on it?" Endora was upset that her life long friend was in so much danger and she could do little to help. She started to move forward towards Sabrina but ran into an invisible wall. The witch seemed to know more than she was telling Endora thought.
"No I didn't but I complicated the matter." She paused then resumed. "She is there to rescue her daughter."
"Sabrina's, in trouble?" How could that be, Endora exclaimed. "We just saw her here, she's upstairs."
"I'm afraid she isn't, that was me you saw with Margrette and all the other times. I've been here for quite awhile." With a wave of her hand Sabrina shape-shifted back into her skunk form. Now that she knew she could do it, it was easy. The others all gasped in watching this thing change into Sabrina. "I was called from my world to help your Sabrina, but ended up with myself here instead. This in turn caused more problems for your Sabrina. All during my stay here I have been trying to find a way to undo what damage I caused. But time was running out and I had to reveal myself to Margrette. Who, even though she knew of the danger, begged me to take her to her daughter. If Margrette does not get that boat to the exit they will both perish."

Endora thought about it for only a few short seconds, her husband wasn't here and it didn't seem she would have the time to contact him. She sighed and turned to her daughter.
"Sabrina, tell your father what happened to me if things go wrong."
Sabrina couldn't believe what her mother just said, "Mom! I can help too. I want to go. That boat is going to need more than two to row." Sabrina said and everyone agreed.
After much debate amongst themselves everyone there volunteered as well. Endora pleaded with the others that this was far too dangerous for them but they were willing none the less. Cheetaur didn't even know Margrette, and Zig Zag, well she was just a friend. Kathren, Endora knew would go, but the others. She was so proud of them all.
"It seems you have a group of us to take witch Sabrina."
"I will ask once again if you all understand the situation." Everyone nodded in agreement. "Alright then prepare yourselves." Endora had no idea how to prepare herself for this.

The next thing everyone knew was that they were all on a boat in the middle of a disaster, right out of the history books. It was all so unbelievable.
Margrette couldn't believe her eyes, "Endora..everyone? You all came?"
"We couldn't leave you here Margrette, that witch Sabrina said this was a do or die situation. I could not leave my best friend here alone to perish." Endora said.
"Margrette, you know nothing was going to stop me from being here." Kathren said.
Everyone else agreed. "So where is this exit that the witch talked about Margrette." Sabrina said.
"If you look behind you will see a light on the ocean, that is where we have to go." They all looked and found it easily against the night sky. They were all awed at everything around them including the giant ship that towered above them.
It was then that the huge ship started to shift farther into the ocean creating waves that started pulling the boat backwards.
"Grab an oar everyone! We have to move now or that ship will drag us under." Margrette shouted. Everyone shifted about carefully and grabbed an oar. Kathren and Cheetaur were strong enough to handle a set of oars each. Endora, Zig Zag and Sabrina grabbed one and started paddling.

It was hard going, the air was cold and even the rowing didn't change that fact. Sabrina, who was now back in human form, remained invisible, watching helplessly from above and saw that the group was freezing despite all their efforts. Giving them coats wouldn't actually be helping them she thought just keeping them warm. She knew it might get her into trouble but her conscience gave her no choice. She cast the spell and suddenly all of them had nice warm coats and gloves on.
"Where did these come from?" Kathren said surprised.
"Looks like were getting a little aid from Sabrina. Thanks Sabrina where ever you are." Margrette said to the night air but there was no reply. She was thankful for the coat, her body was almost frozen. She looked out at the swirling pattern and thought this wasn't going to be easy.
As they rowed Sabrina Johnston came to and since Endora was closest she went to her. "Endora you're here too. What's going on?" Her voice was shallow and barely above a whisper.
"We're trying to save you little one. Your mother has filled us in on what has happened. You save your strength, I think you're going to need it."
Endora cradled her in her arms and it wasn't long before she fell again into unconsciousness. Behind them the great ship was now on its way to the bottom. What was most unsettling was the fact that there was no sound except for the ship slowly sinking. No voices crying for help, nothing but silence. And although the sea was calm the rowing was extremely difficult. It was as if they were rowing through syrup instead of water. They could see the nexus clearly and it seemed to moving closer but ever so slightly. They rowed and rowed, the gloves they had became tattered and almost of no use. Everyone's paws had blisters upon blisters, some were actually bleeding but they didn't give up. They were so close now but the nexus wasn't going to let them in. In fact now they weren't moving forward at all. Emotions were running high all in the wrong direction, they all felt doomed.

Margrette saw the horror of blood stained paws and it washed over her in a wave. She knew of only one way that they were going to get through this, "Sabrina you have to help us!" Margrette cried with every ounce of strength she had left. "We cannot go any further, please help us." Everyone joined in and called to Sabrina for help, she seemed their only hope now. "Sabrina help us please!" Margrette cried, she watched as the others tried desperately to make the boat move but it seemed futile. "Take the others and leave me here, let my family and friends go." Margrette screamed.
Sabrina heard and saw all their agony and fears knowing they could not longer move ahead. Lightning cracked through the air and Sabrina watched in horror as the dreamscape began to vanish before her very eyes. The icebergs, sea and the sky were slowly disintegrating and in no time the boat and all its occupants would also disappear forever. Then she heard a weak voice somehow above all the others calling out.
"Sabrina, I'm sorry I was rude and not very nice. Take my friends and my Mom away, don't let them get trapped here because of me."
It was Sabrina the skunk, the one whose very life she changed places with for awhile. Her mother loved her more than the world and would gladly stay here in her place. If she had a choice to do so. As Sabrina pleaded for her Mother's and Friends lives the boat began to slowly disappear. The group began to scream and that was when she knew, her powers meant nothing if she didn't use them for good. She went to the back of the boat and called upon mystic energies needed to push the boat into the nexus. Her body glowed in such radiance that the group had to turn their eyes away. The sky and surroundings became glowing white all around, then darkness. Sabrina had done the job, saving all those aboard and in a little way, saving herself in the process.

Swirling images assaulted the group, people and places never seen before, then a giant flash of brilliance. And all of them appeared in Endora's living room. It took a moment for their eyes to adjust to the new surroundings.
"She did it, we're alive." Margrette shouted.
"Mom." Said the weak voice of Sabrina Johnston. "She helped us?"
Margrette moved quickly to her daughter. "Yes she did honey, she certainly did." She had known the cost but she had chosen their lives over being a witch. She hoped that she would look back on this as a triumph in her life for she had done the ultimate in good deeds.
"Is it over?" Sabrina Johnston said weakly.
"Yes my love, It's over." She hugged Sabrina and cried knowing the worst was over.
Everyone else's emotions began to get to them and before you knew it there wasn't a dry eye in the place. The nightmare was over all due to the great sacrifice of a witch.

Sabrina returned to her world knowing of the consequences of her actions. However she didn't regret what she had done. She smiled to herself and thought that it was going to be different not having her powers anymore.
"Hi Aunt Zelda, Hilda." She said announcing her return. Her voice didn't have too much spring in it.
Sabrina's Aunts had been worried, "You're back how did it go?" They said in unison.
"I had to use my powers to help them, they weren't going to make it. There wasn't any choice." Sabrina hugged her Aunts and began to cry.
"Sabrina we warned you what would happen if you helped them." Hilda said.
"Yes, I know." Sabrina said trying to get the words out. "But I couldn't let all those furry people die, just for me to have some magic powers. Life is to valuable to lose." She sobbed and the tears flowed down her face and onto her Aunts blouse.
"We are so proud of you Sabrina, you lived up to and beyond our expectations." Said Zelda kissing and hugging Sabrina.
This wasn't the reception she was expecting. "What do you mean? I'm not going to be a witch anymore." Sabrina said confused.
Aunt Zelda wiped the tears from Sabrina's face. "In every witches life there is always a trial. Sometimes it comes early in life like yours or later. It doesn't really matter, what does matter is what the outcome is. You must be willing to give it all up for something you truly believe in your heart is the right thing to do. As you said life is too precious to lose. If you hadn't helped those people then you would have lost your powers forever. You made your choice to save them and in your heart you knew it was the right thing to do. We are so proud of you." The two Aunts came together again and hugged Sabrina who was the light in their lives. Knowing that she still had many things to learn about herself and her powers, but for now she had passed one of the greatest tests of all.

They were a mess, both physically and mentally! It all seemed so unbelievable. Their paws raw and bleeding, they needed help. Zig called Erin to have the truck come to pick them all up. It seemed that most of them were going to need of some minor medical attention. Especially Sabrina, who's arm was horribly bent and that didn't look good. They put it in a temporary splint to make sure nothing else happened to it. The pain from the break was extreme and when they went to move it, she screamed.
Margrette was so emotionally distraught she really didn't know what to do. Kathren tried to comfort her as much as she could but it wasn't really enough. In the end they admitted her to the hospital as well.
When the truck arrived the driver almost freaked out. Here he had just delivered Cheetaur and now she looked she had been run over by her own bus, actually all of them did. He didn't know what to say, he did his best to make everyone comfortable and took it really easy over the bumps.
They were quite a sight at the hospital and were treated immediately. Questions were asked but the answers they came up with made the staff shake their heads. Eventually they just stopped asking and treated them. Zig Zag picked up the bill for it all, Margrette had protested but it didn't make any difference. Endora looked at everyone and it was obvious that nobody was in any shape to do anything really. She was just going to be happy to go home and collapse. Having been on the verge of death kinda puts a damper on your whole day.

They all returned to Endora's house where everyone just fell asleep for several hours. Which is how Warren came home and found them. He found this very strange and became very concerned to find his wife's paws all bandaged up. He decided it was worth waking her. He gently gave her a push and she opened her eyes to see her loving husband.
"Warren? What are you doing home so early?"
"So early? Dear it's almost 10 o'clock in the evening."
"What!" She said as she sat up.
"Whoa slow down there, looks like you had a bit of an accident." He helped her sit up. "I saw your paws and I became concerned, are you ok?"
"Warren you won't believe what I have to tell you."
"Well after seeing that giant Cat-taur creature in our dining room I think I'll be a little open minded."
With the dim light she could just make out Cheetaur's massive form in the dining room. "Oh! I forgot to tell you about her, that's Sabrina's friend her name is Cheetaur. She had no where to sleep." As her senses came back to her she also noticed Zig Zag asleep on the other couch.
"Oh, ok. Now you haven't answered my question love. Are you ok?"
"I'm ok Warren, a few blisters and some very sore muscles. I'll be ok, I take it you have had your supper."
"Yup all fed, you rest. I'll see if anything needs to be done here."
"I think I'll just head to bed."
"I take it Margrette is in as a good a shape as you?"
"No, Margrette is in the hospital."
"Margrette is in the hospital? Ok, so what happened? He was totally confused now.
"I'll tell you upstairs, It's a long story."
"Ah ok." He was really curious now and heading for the kitchen to get a small snack before bed.
Before Endora climbed the stairs, she took a couple of blankets out of the downstairs closet. She placed one gently over Cheetaur and then the other on Zig Zag. To her surprise she got a response out of her, "Thanks Mommy." It was cute to say the least. Then she headed up the stairs, which seemed endless today. When she got to the second floor she looked in on Sabrina. She could just see her outline in the shadows and felt comfort in her being here. It had been a long time since she actually had been here to sleep. She crept into the room and gently moved the covers back up over her daughter's shoulders. Then she gave her little girl a kiss on the cheek and wished her pleasant dreams. She would always think of her as her little girl, even now that she had her own life and man who loved her. She was a special part of her life that she cherished. As she left Sabrina's room it came to mind that she would also have to thank the Mitchell's down the road. Keeping Tabitha overnight was a Godsend, they were good people. She knew her husband was making a late night snack. It really didn't bother her as long as he didn't have onions. She was going to have to explain the whole thing but it was a story to tell. Tomorrow would be a fresh start to a whole new day, thank GOD!

The day started out fine, she felt well rested. Warren, since he was on a weird shift this week stayed in bed for awhile longer. She gave him a kiss and went downstairs to start some coffee to brew. She thought she was going to be by herself but that was until she heard Sabrina say "Make enough for two." Another voice from the dining room said three, then changed its mind and said four. Cheetaur ducked as she passed through the door then settled by the table. Hoping that she wasn't too much in the way. To Endora her small part of the world was waking with her this morning.
"Well that was quite the day wasn't it." Endora said making conversation.
Sabrina found it hard to believe it actually happened. "Yeah it was, it all seems unreal."
Zig Zag had heard the conversation and came in and sat at the table. "Well my blisters are real." she said putting up her bandaged paws. "I didn't think we were going to make it. If it wasn't for that witch we would still be there I think."
"I wonder what happened to her? Margrette told us that she was forbidden to help us but she did anyway." When Sabrina finished her sentence, as if on cue a note appeared on the table from out of nowhere.
"I think we might have an answer to that." Said Endora.
She picked up the note and read:

Dear Sabrina,

I hope this letter finds you well, I am sorry that things got so out of hand. It was partially my fault. I have been to see the witches counsel, it governs all witches and warlocks. They studied my case and, well, in layman's terms have been grounded for a short time.
Although I was forbidden to help you escape I did so anyway, it was what I felt was the right thing to do. In terms I didn't understand at the time this was a test of courage for me. Witches are special people who have great responsibilities laid upon their shoulders. I proved myself worthy in the eyes of the counsel to continue being a witch.

I hope your arm heals, your friends are truly the bravest souls I know of, they risked everything for you. Especially your mother she would have traded places with you in an instant, she is truly an amazing mom. Tell her I am really sorry I deceived her and her friends. I hope she can forgive me.

Take care, our paths will cross again. After I work off my punishments I'll try to pop in to see you.

Your friend Sabrina the teenage witch.

"Well looks like we have our answer, sounds like she's going to be a very responsible witch there in her own world." Endora said.
"Yeah helping us it seems helped her as well. I just want to know how a witch from another world of beings got mixed-up with us."
"Hopefully Sabrina knows and can tell us." Zig Zag said. "I would like to know that too, but without that witches help we would have been sunk."
They all looked at her and moaned.
"What'd I say?" Zig Zag asked innocently, she hadn't really realized what she had said. "So what is on your agenda for to day Endora?"
"Probably going to the hospital in a couple of hours to see how Margrette and Sabrina are getting along. Not too sure about the rest of you people."
"I doubt the bus is repaired yet so I'll have to stay here and out of everyone's hair." Cheetaur said. "Maybe watch some TV."
"Well it's a little early for the office, I'll probably head home for awhile." Said Zig Zag.
"I still don't have a car so I won't be in the office today." Said Sabrina.
"I'm sure your car is there at your place waiting for you. It had better be or Greg is going to have a lot of explaining to do." Said Zig. "Don't bother with the office today Sabrina, I may even stay clear of the place."

The rest of the day went smoothly, Margrette and Sabrina were both released from the hospital. The doctors had questions about where Sabrina's cast went. Their explanations were creative but had the doctors scratching their heads. Sabrina wasn't much help in that department either, she just said she didn't remember. Sabrina bearing the cast complained that it itched already, although she had barely had it on a partial day. The doctors had to break her arm again and set it properly. This time they put her whole arm in a cast. They thought that Sabrina must have torn the other one off somehow. This time it wouldn't be so easy. The doctors told Endora and Margrette to watch Sabrina carefully because they were worried. The tearing off the cast was something they had no explanation for and really wanted to keep her for at least another day.

Since Margrette really didn't have a viable explanation she agreed that Sabrina would stay for another day. It would give her at least another day to rest. They returned home and phoned Christine. She said to drop by in the afternoon, she had everything done but some signatures.
They spent sometime talking with Cheetaur and having a few laughs. Endora and Kathren met Christine at her office. She had been great through the whole thing. Even if she was a lawyer Margrette thought she had to be one of the better ones. Who knew there was such a thing?
"Now if you sign here, here, here and here, Margrette we'll complete our business." Said Christine in a soft voice. She was glad that she was able to help one Zig Zag's friends.
Margrette signed several pages where Christine indicated. In detail the documents just stated that she and her husband Frank were now declared as the only living relatives and that they would inherit the estate of one Sarah Sky.
"Now what are you going to do with all your money?" Christine smiled.
"Ah what money Christine?" Margrette knew there would be some money but a lot of that would have to be put back into Sarah's Funeral. She mentally sighed to herself, the thought of the Funeral had been put off because of all the other problems that she had encountered. This was going to have to be the next thing on her agenda.
"You mean you didn't know?"
"Know what?"
"Oh this is good!" A big smile came over Christine's face. "Margrette your Aunt had quite a bit of money."
Margrette's eyes lit up. "Really! We never really looked at the bank books we just packed them up for you."
"Yup! Wanna take a guess?"
"40,000"
"Nope" She was still smiling.
"More"
"Oh yeah." Her smile got bigger.
"70"
"Let's try 250,000 dollars."
Margrette's jaw almost hit the floor. "A quarter of a million!"
"Yup! American, it think that's a bit more in Canadian."
"You're darn right it is!" She couldn't believe their good fortune. She squeezed Endora's paw and smiled at Kathren. At last things were finally going her way.
"Now I'm not sure what the Canadian Government policies are on Inheritance's but I'm sure you will get to see some of this money anyway."
"Yes, I'm sure our local Government will want its share, can't have us poor folks getting rich you see." It was sarcasm but it was the general feeling all round.
"Most people always feel that they are taxed to death and it many cases they are." Christine said.
"Congratulations, Margrette." She put out her paw and Margrette gave it a definite shake.
